    • Conrad Christopher Strecker was born January 26, 1861 in Helmsdorf, Germany (the region which was then called Prussia). He came to Independence, Kansas in his early years. He married Katherine on June 1, 1886 and they had several children. . Seven years later, and anticipating the long run into the Cherokee Strip opening of 1893, at Caldwell, Kansas. Conrad Strecker checked the horse shoes of Danny, the horse he would ride when the gun signalled. As the horse shoes were fashioned and shod from his own blacksmith shop in Independence, Kansas, they rode straight through to the location of Pond Creek lots--the main street then was a block south of the now Main Street, soon setting up a Blacksmith Shop and Hardware. Katherine and her boys, Ally and Herbert, joined Conrad in Pond Creek to make their home at the north edge. A third son, Owen was born 8 Jun 1894 and was one of the first children born in Pond Creek. A fourth son, Frank, was born 20 Mar 1897, and a fifth son, Carl, was born 7 Dec 1901. William Edgar was born on 08 May 1909 and they became known as "Strecker's Six Sons". . As the change-over to the now Main Street came about, Strecker built and opened a Hardware Store. The building, which bore his name at the top, stood until about the 60s or 70s. The horse shoes hung over the front door of the store. Supplying homesteaders with needed implements--wagons, etc--the first buggy, with carriage lights, was bought by Gust Johnson, but first used by the Strecker's for [the sad conveyance to the cemetery of] their infant daughter. The cemetery land was given to Pond Creek by Strecker and lots were marked off by Mrs. Strecker's sister, Margaret O'Callaghan, nurse and hospital superintendent of Independence, Kansas.. The early years were prosperous and he bought controlling stock of the First State Bank at Breckenridge and Goltry. Through this period he acquired eight quarters of land in Grant County, which he later deeded to his sons. Both Katherine and Conrad were proud of home and family. Their new home was built on East Main Street. Strecker also had a land and merchandise business in Conrad, Montana. . In 1903, they took time for a trip to Europe, so Conrad could show Kate his former home [in Germany]. They visited the Vatican and their friend, Father Murphy, who had been a guest many times at the Strecker home. Katherine, being a very devout Catholic, gave much to Catholic Church Building Funds [St Joseph's Parish, Pond Creek?] and donated the organ selected by Dave Parkinson, a fine musician of Pond Creek. . July 1922 marked the passing of Conrad and as they had moved to Wichita, Kansas after his retirement from the banking business, he is buried in lots purchased at Wichita Cemetery on Kellogg Street (having purchased lots for eight). He and Kate, who passed away at the Oklahoma City Hospital on 18 Feb 1951, are at rest together there. As though an era has ended with Carl, the last of the six sons, died 13 May 1979. Carl is the only son to be buried at the Pond Creek Cemetery on the land his father gave. ---------------------- New Railroad Chartered A charter was issued from the territorial secretary’s office this morning to the St. Louis, Bartesville and Pacific Railroad company, with $1,200,000 capital stock. He organized a number of banks in the Pond Creek locality. About 20 years ago he was mayor of that city. He was an extensive traveler both in the United States and abroad, and is said to have visited nearly every important point on both continents. He was in Rome at the time of the death of Pope Pius XIII. He was a member of the Catholic church, and an educational leader. Mr. strecker is survived by his wife Catherine E. Strecker; six sons, Conrad A. of Enid, Herbert A., Edwin E., and Frank C., all of Montana, Carl F. and William E. of Wichita; a sister Mrs. Ida C. Engert of Ashville, Okla. Conrad Christopher Strecker was born January 26, 1861 in Helmsdorf, Germany (the region which was then called Prussia).
