- [S10] Staff, Obituary: Benson, Velma L. (Ulrich), (Name: Petoskey News-Review; Location: Petoskey, Emmett, Michigan, United States;), Obituary: Benson, Velma L. (Ulrich).
Lifelong area resident Velma L. Benson passed away peacefully at her home in Harbor Springs, surrounded by her loving family Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017.
She was born Velma Louise Ulrich in Petoskey, Mich., on Aug. 29, 1938, to G. Victor and Helen (Daniels) Ulrich. She grew up in Petoskey and was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, Class of 1956.
For much of her adult life Velma worked as a waitress at a number of area restaurants. She enjoyed gardening, berry picking and was an avid morel hunter.
Throughout her life, however, her true focus was others. Whether it be raising her kids, or doting on her grandchildren, the needs of those around her were always put first. She was also one of those people who gave freely of themselves through volunteerism. Her volunteer efforts in the community were numerous and included the Harbor Springs Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, New Beginnings Thrift Store, Harbor Springs Women's Club and Holy Childhood Catholic Church.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, G. Victor and Helen; her son, Kevin Maguire; by her brothers and sisters, Pat Stark, Ed Ulrich, Winnifred Eaton, Evelyn Wolf and Tom Ulrich.
Her surviving family includes her husband of 49 years, Ronald; her children, Kim (Bob) Buntin and Christopher (Amber) Benson ; daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Maguire; her grandchildren, Connor Buntin, Maddie Buntin, Jenna Maguire and Billy Maguire; and sisters, Lila Goodrich and Beatrice (Jim) Wolf, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Velma 's family will forever hold close to their hearts the memories of a wife, mom and grandma who always had time to listen, who always made you feel safe, who would laugh or cry with you, and who when needed would gladly help to shoulder any load no matter how heavy, and above all loved unconditionally.
Velma 's life will be remembered and celebrated during a Memorial Mass that is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Holy Childhood Catholic Church. Friends are welcome to visit with Velma 's family in the church beginning at 10 Friday morning.
While flowers are welcome, Velma 's family would deeply appreciate friends consider a donation to either Hospice of Little Traverse Bay or to the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society.
