Anne Marie Smith (nee Scharf), 99, God's faithful servant, entered into eternal rest peacefully on June 1, 2025 with her family by her side. Anne Marie was born on August 27, 1925, the first daughter of Frances and Nicholas Scharf. On June 26, 1946, she married William J. Smith who treasured and honored her though 39 years of marriage, until William's death in 1986. Anne Marie and Bill were the loving and proud parents of seven children. Anne Marie lived every day with and modeled a loving, grateful faith in God and his care. She had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her faith never wavered, even when God called three of her sons home during her lifetime. Throughout her life, she honored and welcomed many relatives, friends and religious men and women to her home, always finding room for one more at the table whether on the spur of the moment or for a holiday dinner where she selflessly shared her amazing talents as a cook and baker. For many years, she gave of her sewing and mending talents to the Jesuit community of St. Ignatius High School and led a Mission Circle for the Jesuit Patna Missions. Anne Marie also served as a volunteer instructor for the Parish School of Religion at St. Mark Catholic Church, Cleveland, where she and Bill were founding members. In addition to William, Anne Marie was preceded in death by her sons, Rev. Paul F. Smith, William J. Smith, Jr. and John Robert Smith, and her three brothers, William Scharf, Rev. Joseph Scharf, S.J., and Robert Scharf. Anne Marie is survived by her children, Sr. Carol Anne Smith, H.M., Kathleen Chevalier (Robert), Joanne Young (George) and Bernard (Mary); her grandchildren, Matthew Kemper, Daniel Kemper, Christine Jones, Stephen Kemper, Marie Burger, Carolyn Guion, Michael Young, Colleen Fields, Theresa Smith, Michelle Smith and William Smith; fifteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; her sister Alberta Nieberding (James, deceased); and many nieces and nephews.
