    • Democrat and People's Journal DEATH OF MR. MICHAEL MEADE A host of friends, especially amongst the older generation in Louth and Meath and adjacent counties learned with regret of the death of Mr. Michael Meade, late of Castlebellingham, which took place at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Ward, in Dublin, on Monday last. Mr. Meade was in an earlier day one of the most extensive and best known men in the Irish cattle trade. He had a very extensive business connection, especially with the districts around Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. An excellent judge of his business, and a man honest as the sun in all his dealings, he earned the esteem of all with whom he came in contact on both sides of the water. He fully deserved the success that attended his business. It was natural that one whose daily intercourse with the agricultural population should have actively sympathised. with their struggles for emancipation; and from away back in Land League times he took a keen and intelligent interest in Irish political movements. it was typical of the man-honest and loyal, and regardless of the currents of popular opinion-that he took his stand behind Parnell at the time oi the disastrous “split” in Irish politics, and never faltered from the path he chose. It was typical of him also that in a later "split" he stood as loyally behind Redmond and his-as it transpired-unpopular policy. Bluff and fearless and outspoken, he was neither to be cajoled nor driven from a course of action to which he committed himself. And those who knew him well realised that behind this there was a sound judgment, founded on a very intimate knowledge of political movements in Ireland during more than half a century. Mr. Meade was one of the early members of the Louth County Council and held that office until advancing years counselled his retirement. His sound business instincts were of very considerable service to the County Council and on the Grange-gorman Board of which he was for many years a member. His warm heart, his blunt and honest speech, his unfailing loyalty to his friends, won for him the respect and affection of his colleagues: and no man on the Council was more deservedly popular. Mr. Meade, who had reached the ripe age of 84 years enjoyed excellent health until a year or two ago. His death followed a brief illness, in which he enjoyed the consolations of his religion. Very many friends attended the internment at Kilsaran on Wednesday, the remains having been brought by road after Mass in Sandymount Church; and many were the expressions of regret and testimonies to the honest worth of the departed. The chief mourners were: Messrs. Thomas Meade (Newcastle-on-Tyne) and Vincent Meade (sons); Mrs. W. Russell, Sr. M. Benignus, Mrs. Ward, and Mrs. Smith (daughters); W. Russell, J. O‘H Ward, and J.
