Notes - Liberty Athletics mourns the loss of Morgan Hout, a former head football coach and Athletics Hall of Fame member, who passed away on Nov. 1 at the age of 76.
Hout, the fourth head coach in the history of Liberty’s football program, was inducted into the Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020. (Watch an interview with Hout filmed prior to the Hall of Fame induction ceremony that year.)
Hout was a pioneer and the visionary head coach who guided Liberty’s football program through the transition from the NCAA Division II ranks into the Division I era.
Hout was at the helm of the football program from 1984-88, where he coached 11 All-Americans. He also helped recruit 11 Liberty football players who went on to play in the NFL, including the two highest NFL Draft selections in football program history.
Hout’s squads continually faced off against the toughest competition in the country. His 1984 team wrapped up the season with a 27-14 win over NAIA ranked No. 1 Carson-Newman, marking the first time in program history Liberty defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the country at any level.
The native of Marietta, Ga., guided Liberty to an 8-3 record during the program’s first year at the NCAA I-AA level in 1988, and finished the year ranked No. 18 in the country. He was duly honored for his efforts when he was named the 1988 VaSID Coach of the Year and the Bobby Ross Coach of the Year.
In recent years, Hout served as a community liason in Liberty’s Hancock Welcome Center, greeting prospective students and their parents as they visited campus in a similar fashion to how he recruited prospective players during his time as the Flames’ head football coach.
Hout will be honored at this weekend’s football game against Louisiana Tech on Saturday evening at Williams Stadium. He will also be recognized on Friday during a banquet where Liberty Athletics is honoring 50 years of Liberty Football history.

Liberty athletics mourns the loss of former Flames football Head Coach and Athletics Hall of Fame member Morgan Hout, who passed away Nov. 1 at the age of 76.
Hout led the football program from 1984-88, where he ushered the team in its transition from an NCAA Division II program to Division I.
The Georgia native got his first opportunity in the coaching world as an unpaid assistant at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he spent six seasons. After a several-year stint at the University of Richmond as an assistant coach, Hout found his home on the Mountain.
In his time at the helm for the Flames, Hout coached 11 All-Americans and helped recruit 11 Liberty football players who went on to play in the NFL.
The coach eventually moved on to Georgetown University in 1993, settling down in Lexington, Kentucky for the next phase of his life. In 2012, however, he returned to the Hill City, serving as in the Hancock Welcome Center to welcome prospective students and parents to Liberty.
He will long be remembered for his relentless kindness, perseverance and passion for passing on knowledge and experience to everyone he came across - whether on the football field or in everyday life.

Morgan "Coach" Hout, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, November 1st.
Morgan was born in Columbus, OH in 1947 to Paul and Colleen Hout. His family moved to the Atlanta area a short time later, where he would eventually meet his future spouse, Brenda. The two would be married in 1968, and would later move to Greenville, South Carolina, where he and Brenda attended Bob Jones University.
After accepting his first coaching job in 1970, Morgan's career would continue to grow to encompass coaching positions in the arena and college leagues - including the University of Maryland, Liberty University, and other institutions. Many players impacted by Coach Hout would go on to have successful careers in professional football, including the NFL.
After moving to Kentucky in 1993 and accepting a coaching position at Georgetown University, Coach Hout eventually settled in Lexington, KY with his wife, Brenda, and two children, Morgan and Jonathan. Coach Hout remained in Lexington for 12 years before moving to Pompano Beach, FL after his children finished high school - where he would continue to coach football at the high school level for an additional eight years.
In 2012, Coach Hout returned to Lynchburg and rejoined Liberty University, where he remained employed until he retired at age 74. Morgan was well-known for his deep involvement in and love for athletics at Liberty University, and he was inducted into the Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame for his role in transitioning Liberty's Football Program from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I during his tenure as Head Football Coach from 1984-1988.
Over the course of his entire life, Morgan loved all things related to sports, and was always willing to share his near-inexhaustible supply of knowledge on the subject to all who asked. His skill as a coach, teacher, and mentor was well-regarded and deeply appreciated by all who were fortunate enough to know him. He exemplified kindness to all he met, perseverance in the face of adversity, and an unending drive to pass on his knowledge and experience to his players - especially his children.
Most of all, he was dearly loved by Brenda, his wife of 55 years, who faithfully supported him throughout the twists and turns of his coaching career - all while raising their two children. Morgan and Brenda enjoyed traveling, watching movies, and going to athletic events together.
Morgan was a man who led by example - putting Christ first in his family, career, and friendships - instilling his values and wisdom in everyone he touched. Most of all, Morgan was a faithful and supportive husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a coach and mentor to a great many athletes. He will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him.
Morgan is survived by his wife, Brenda; his daughter Morgan Stanhope and her husband Thor; his son Jonathan and his wife Sarah; and his nine grandchildren: Hayden, Izzabella, Lexi, Joseph, Caleb, Allyssa, Hannah, Daniel, and Aribella.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider donations in Morgan's name to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at ??https://www.fca.org/donate.
A Memorial Service will be held on November 11th, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Thomas Road Baptist Church in the Pate Chapel, 1 Mountain View Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502.
