Mary Alice Riley, 80 of Petoskey, Michigan, passed away on April 1, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Daughter of Herbert and Katherine (Mayer) Daniel, Mary was born on April 6, 1942 in Petoskey. She grew up on her family’s farm in Petoskey and graduated from St. Francis High School in 1960. Mary attended St. Mary School of Technology in Grand Rapids, Michigan to become a registered radiology technician.

On June 9, 1962, she married Louis “Bud” Riley in Petoskey at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. They were best friends and were rarely apart during their 60 wonderful years together.

Following their wedding, Mary and Bud moved to Danvers, Massachusetts while Bud was stationed at Danvers Army Base. Mary began her career as a radiology technician at the Danvers Hospital during this time. They returned to Flint, Michigan in 1964 so Bud could attend barber school while Mary continued her career. They then moved to Traverse City for a few years before returning to their hometown in 1974 where Mary worked in radiology at Northern Michigan Hospital for over 40 years.

Mary loved to play cards. It was not uncommon for her to play a heated game of “Peanuts” until 3:00 AM with her family, especially her sisters. She also loved sewing, gardening, and tending to her flower beds. She adored her family, especially her grandchildren. She spent many hours in the yard and on the swing set with them when they were young, and never missed a sporting event during their school years.

Mary was a woman of deep faith that was devoted to her family and will be missed by many. In Bud’s words, “she was a sweetheart”.

Mary was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Church, volunteered at Brother Dan’s Food Pantry and as a 4-H Leader for many years.

She is survived by her husband Louis “Bud” Riley; her children Mark Riley of Portland, Oregon and Susan (Brian) Sanderson of Petoskey, Michigan; her grandchildren Steven (Danielle) Behan of New Hudson, Michigan and Taylor (Brandon) Carson of Petoskey; her great-granddaughter Kendall Behan; her siblings Magdalen Skiver, Edna (Craig) Shaw, and Norm (Emily) Daniel; her sisters-in-law Joan Daniel and Ruth Daniel; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Katherine Daniel; and her brothers Carl Daniel, Charles Daniel, and Tom Daniel.

Those wishing to make a charitable donation in Mary’s memory are asked to consider Brother Dan’s Food Pantry.

A memorial mass for Mary will be officiated by Father Greg McCallum on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at 11:30 AM. A visitation will begin at 10:30 AM.

Joan Lillian Daniel, 84, of Petoskey, Michigan passed away on June 22, 2024, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital. She was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois to Aloysius Zyks and Irene (Nawrocki) Zyks. Joan graduated from Madonna High School and went on to meet the love of her life and future husband, Charles Daniel. They were married on June 20, 1959, at Saint Wenceslaus Church in Chicago, IL. The pair later moved to northern Michigan where they would spend the rest of their lives falling deeper in love with one another and creating a shining example of unconditional devotion for their children and many other children in the community that they helped raise.

Joan was a talented craftswoman who was both an at-home artist, and a hairdresser who boasted of her own hair salon. She was fiercely proud of her Polish heritage and spent many years hosting her extended family from Poland whom she helped break into the fabric of northern Michigan, allowing them to pursue their goal of becoming United States citizens. Joan loved being a mother and she helped raise not only her four children but eleven in total that were community members who had lost their parents. Her and her sister, Lois, were very adventurous people. She was a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Petoskey.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Aloysius and Irene Zyks; husband Charles Daniel; and sister Lois Zyks.

She is survived by her daughters Julie (Ron) Rinock of Boyne Falls and Jacalyn (Allan) Burke of Charlevoix; her sons Peter (Jimmy) Daniel of Decatur, Georgia and Patrick (Cara) Daniel of Petoskey; grandchildren Robert George, Olivia Rinock, and Michelle (Nicholas) Rodriguez; and great grandson Theodore Rodriguez.

A graveside service will be held to honor her life officiated by Father Dennis Stillwell on Monday July 1, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Xavier cemetery in Petoskey, MI. A luncheon will follow at the Knights of Columbus dining hall.

He later went to work at Northern Michigan Hospital, now McLaren Northern Michigan, where he worked in the X-Ray Dept for 24 years before formally retiring.
