He lived in the Conarchy Hotel which was owned and operated by his parents. He heard from guests especially Harry Clanahan at the hotel about the United States and decided to move there. When he told his father about his intentions to go to the United States, he was asked how his shoe leather was because his father didn't intend to pay his fare to America. Kyran traveled to Liverpool as the first stage in his trip. His mother took pity on him and sent funds to a priest to pay for his fare. She didn't want him to travel in steerage. She sent the money to the priest to buy the ticket because she knew that if she gave Kyran the money he would save it and travel in steerage anyway. He sailed from Liverpool England on April 24, 1913 on a vessel named Cedric. His port of entry was New York on May 3, 1913. When he arrived in the United States he stayed with his Uncle Pat Phelan. He may have first gone to the Clanahan's place in Belleville, Illinois. When he first arrived at the Phelan door, he was greeted by a woman in an apron. Kyran was used to the maids at the hotel and asked for the lady of the house. The woman was Aunt Agnes. He later moved to a boarding house run by Roselia (Callahan) Lavery where he met his future wife, Jane Mary Lavery.
He became a US citizen on March 5, 1920 in the Superior Court of Cook County, Illinois. Certificate of Naturalization 1345049.
Parents, two sisters and a brother are buried at Glasnevin Cemetery outside Dublin, Ireland.
When they lived in Milwaukee on Illinois Avenue, he used to frequently go for a swim in Lake Michigan before going to work. He was very well known for telling stories and he particularly enjoyed entertaining children with them. He trusted and loved all people and could communicate with people at all positions in life.
