Notes
Herbert James Kelly walked to Linden High School for two years, but did not graduate. He worked as a hired man for Will Harris's father. In the late 1890's, he and uncle Alf spent two winters attending the "Short Course" for farmers given by the University of Wisconsin Agricultural Department at Madison. He farmed in the Bloomfield-Laxey Community of Iowa County, Wisconsin for many years and it was here that his children were born. He loved farming and was a good farmer. Uncle Bert was on the District #4 School Board for many of these years. The family attended Laxey Church as long as it was functioning, and then as many members did, they transferred to the First Congregational Church in Mineral Point.
On the farm, they fattened cattle and produced the feed fro them on the farm. They had some excellent blue-grass pasture in the Pecontonica River Valley where the steers were kept during the summer.
The writer recalls the visits to the home in which the children wer given the opportunity to pedal the player piano. That was a thrill. Uncle Bert retired to Mineral Point. After Aunt Mary's death, Uncle Bert lived with the children, including several years with his daughter Grace in Sacramento adn then in Stockton, California where he continued his interest in gardening. They had beautiful flowers, particularly roses.
From Leroy Reese
Mary Jackson Kelly born in 1875 to the mining family in the "Cornish" part of Mineral Point, absorbed atmosphere so well that she later amused her children by imitating Cornish accents and sayings of early Cornish immigrants. At the age of 13 she moved with her family to the Bloomfield farm where she spent most of her life, moving there again in 1911 after her marriage to Herbert Kelly in 1899. With limited education but with near total recall and keen interest in national affairs, she surpassed any of her children in citing names, dates, etc. of national figures. Almost any day of the year she could mention (and often did) whose birthday it was or what event happened on that day.
